FlyDubai Captain Smit Machchhar: Hero Who Saved 174 Lives
Last updated: 2 October 2026
A routine FlyDubai Dubai–Tel Aviv flight turned into a mid-air nightmare on Wednesday — and made a hero of its Indian captain. Captain Smit Machchhar, 38, from Mumbai, was stabbed in his own cockpit in an alleged attempt to crash the plane. Bleeding heavily, he still alerted air-traffic control and opened the cockpit door, letting passengers and crew save everyone on board.
What Happened on Flight FZ1073
Flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 on Dubai–Tel Aviv, carried 174 people including 27 children. Mid-flight, the Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar in the cockpit. The exact weapon has not been officially verified.
The jet plunged 33,000 to 17,000 feet in a minute. Crew and passengers fought back, restrained the attacker, and the plane made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where the co-pilot was arrested. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News the co-pilot appeared suicidal and claimed “Islamist radicalisation” — his statements; investigators are still establishing the motive.
How Captain Smit Machchhar Saved the Plane
The captain took terrible injuries — stab wounds to the head and neck, an arm nearly split in two, heavy blood loss. On-board dentist Shota Musaev said the cockpit was full of blood.

Yet Machchhar alerted air-traffic control and opened the cockpit door, letting passengers and crew enter and overpower the attacker. As his pulse dropped, Musaev urged the reserve pilots to land at once: “I don’t think he would have survived all the way to Israel.”

The Passengers Who Became “Superheroes”
Netanyahu called it “Hollywood on steroids”: passengers — including a plumber — rushed the cockpit and tied the attacker with a headphone cord, while off-duty pilots among them took the controls.
“These are ordinary civilians… who became heroes — superheroes,” Netanyahu said, adding the world “could be sitting today in a 9-11 tragedy, with bodies scattered in the desert.”

Modi and India Salute the Captain
PM Narendra Modi called him a hero, praising “patience, presence of mind and courage”, and said he had prevented “another 9/11-like attack”. Modi spoke with the pilot’s parents and wife: “Smit’s bravery fills every Indian with pride.”
Ambassador Deepak Mittal visited him in hospital (“recovering well”); after treatment in Tabuk he was shifted to Abu Dhabi. EAM Randhir Jaiswal saluted his “valour and courage”.
Gujarat Honour, Rs 25 Lakh — and Who He Is
On Thursday, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel announced the ‘Vishisht Gujarat Garima Award’ for the Gujarati-origin captain, plus Rs 25 lakh cash. Deputy CM Harsh Sanghavi said Gujarat was proud of its “brave son”.
The 38-year-old lives in Dubai with his wife and two children; his family is from Mumbai. He trained in New Zealand; colleagues call him sober and grounded. His career had seen an in-flight birth, monsoon skies, a demanding landing in Greece — but nothing like Wednesday.
