ETIAS Delayed: New Europe Entry Rules for Indians Explained

Planning a Europe trip this winter? Here is an important update on the Europe entry rules for Indians. The EU’s much-talked-about ETIAS travel authorisation — once expected late this year — has been delayed and is no longer expected to launch in 2026. The official EU ETIAS website quietly removed its launch timeline in mid-July, after reporting indicated the system would not be ready. Most observers now point to 2027, with no confirmed date announced.

The good news for Indian passport holders: you never needed ETIAS anyway. What actually affects your journey is a different system — the EES biometric border checks — which is already live at European borders. Here is exactly what has changed and what has not.

What Got Delayed — and Why

ETIAS (the European Travel Information and Authorisation System) was meant to be a pre-travel online authorisation for nationals of visa-exempt countries visiting Europe’s Schengen area — think American, British or Canadian tourists. The plan was a late-2026 launch with a €20 application fee, valid for about three years.

In mid-July, the official EU ETIAS page removed its target launch date. Financial Times reporting around the same time indicated that eu-LISA, the EU agency building the system, had concluded a 2026 launch was no longer feasible. As of October, no revised date has been published, and most immigration experts now expect a 2027 launch.

Key points about the delay:

  • No official new date exists. Earlier forecasts of an early-2027 start are expert estimates, not EU announcements.
  • The application portal is not open. Any website currently claiming to accept ETIAS applications or payments is fraudulent.
  • Grace periods still apply. When ETIAS eventually launches, it will carry roughly a six-month transition period followed by a six-month grace period before strict enforcement.

What This Means for Indian Passport Holders

This is the part most Indian travellers misunderstand. ETIAS is for visa-exempt nationalities. India is not one of them. If you hold an Indian passport and want to visit France, Germany, Italy or any Schengen country for a short stay, you need a Schengen visa — and that requirement is completely unchanged by the ETIAS delay.

In practical terms:

  • You do not need ETIAS, now or later, as long as Indian passport holders require a Schengen visa.
  • Your Schengen visa process stays exactly the same — apply at the relevant consulate or visa centre, generally 4 to 6 weeks before travel.
  • The ETIAS delay changes nothing about your Europe trip planning this year.

What Has Not Changed — EES Biometric Checks Are Live

While ETIAS waits, the EU’s other new border system — the Entry/Exit System (EES) — has been fully operational since 10 April 2026. This is the system you will actually encounter at a European airport or land border.

System What It Is Applies to Indians? Status
EES Digital border registration with fingerprints and facial image, replacing passport stamping Yes — all non-EU short-stay visitors Live since 10 April 2026
ETIAS Pre-travel online authorisation No — only for visa-exempt nationalities Delayed, likely 2027
Schengen visa Short-stay visa for the Schengen area Yes — Indians need it before travel Unchanged

The EES records your entry and exit digitally, so it tracks the 90-days-in-180-days stay rule automatically. First-time registration can add roughly 5 to 10 minutes per traveller at busy borders. Rollout is also uneven — some airports collect biometrics as planned while others still stamp passports manually — so official guidance is to allow extra time at immigration and rely only on official EU channels for updates.

Scam Warning — Fake ETIAS Websites

Because ETIAS has been in the news for years without launching, scammers have built a small industry around it. Protect yourself:

  • Never pay anyone for ETIAS right now. The portal is not open, and no official fee is being collected.
  • No private agent can “pre-register” you. There is no early-application list or shortcut — anyone promising one is lying.
  • Use only the official EU website once the system actually launches.

This is the same vigilance you need against fraud — see the Indian Embassy’s warning about Malaysia visa-free job scams — fraudsters follow every popular immigration topic.

Practical Border Tips for Your Next Europe Trip

  1. Apply for your Schengen visa early: consulates suggest 4 to 6 weeks of lead time; peak-season slots can vanish fast.
  2. Keep documents consistent: itinerary, bookings and bank details should tell one coherent story.
  3. Arrive at immigration earlier: allow extra time for EES biometric checks, especially on connecting flights.
  4. Recheck before you fly: verify the latest guidance on the official EU website shortly before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has ETIAS been cancelled?
No — it has been delayed, not cancelled. The official launch timeline was removed from the EU website in mid-July 2026, and a 2027 launch is now the most widely cited expectation. No confirmed date has been announced.

Do Indian passport holders need ETIAS?
No. ETIAS applies only to nationals of visa-exempt countries. Indians generally require a Schengen visa for short visits to Europe, so ETIAS does not apply to them.

What is EES and does it affect me?
The Entry/Exit System is the EU’s digital border-registration system. It applies to all non-EU short-stay visitors, including Indians, and it is already live — expect biometric registration (fingerprints and facial image) at the border instead of a manual passport stamp.

Should I pay a website offering ETIAS applications now?
No. The ETIAS portal is not open and no official applications are being collected. Any site taking money for ETIAS applications today is fraudulent.

I am travelling to Europe this winter — what should I do differently?
Nothing related to ETIAS. Apply for your Schengen visa as usual, arrive at European airports with extra time for EES checks, and check the official EU website shortly before departure.
