Advance Payment Fraud: 6 Checks Before Paying Any Agent
Share this article:WhatsApp

Thousands of Indians lose their savings every year to advance payment fraud — fake agents who take lakhs upfront for visas and jobs that never exist. The pattern is always the same: big promises, pressure to pay fast, and then silence. These 6 checks, done before you pay a single rupee, can save your hard-earned money.

Check 1: Verify the Agent’s License on eMigrate

Overseas job agents in India must be registered with the Protector of Emigrants (PoE). Check the agent’s license number on the official eMigrate portal (emigrate.gov.in) yourself — do not trust a screenshot or a photocopy of a license. If the agent’s name is not on the portal, walk away. Travel agents should have a verifiable business address, GST details, and a real track record.

Check 2: Verify the Demand Letter Independently

A genuine foreign employer issues a demand letter — a document stating the job, salary, and terms. Ask for a copy and verify it: search the employer’s official website, call their published phone number, or check with the Indian embassy in that country. Fraudsters forge impressive-looking letters; independent verification exposes them.

Check 3: Never Pay the Full Amount Upfront

The golden rule against advance payment fraud: genuine processes have stage-wise payments. Pay a small consultation fee (ours is ₹799, non-refundable), and pay the rest only when milestones happen — work permit issued, visa stamped. Anyone demanding the full amount “today or the offer goes” is running a classic pressure scam.

Check 4: Insist on a Written Agreement and Receipts

Every payment must have a written receipt with the agency’s name, GST number, amount, and purpose. Get a written agreement stating what service you are paying for and what happens if the visa or job does not come through — including the refund policy. Cash payments without receipts are the fraudster’s favourite tool.

Check 5: Watch for the Classic Red Flags

Red Flag What It Really Means
“100% visa guarantee” Nobody can guarantee a visa — embassy decides
Salary far above market Lure to make you ignore the checks
Refuses written receipts Planning to disappear
No verifiable office address Ghost operation
Asks you to recruit others Pyramid-style trap

If even one red flag appears, pause everything and re-verify.

Check 6: Take Time — Genuine Offers Wait

Real visas take weeks or months. Real employers do interviews and paperwork. The fraudster’s weapon is urgency — “only 2 seats left, pay now.” A genuine offer will still be there tomorrow after you verify it. Call the embassy helpline, ask a trusted person, and sleep on any big payment decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

I already paid a fake agent. What should I do?
File a complaint at your nearest police station and on cybercrime.gov.in. Also report the agent on the eMigrate portal. Keep all receipts, chats, and call records as evidence.

Is it safe to pay online to an agent?
Only after verification. Pay to the agency’s official bank account or UPI in the business name — never to a personal account or a stranger’s UPI ID.

How do I check an agency’s reviews?
Search the agency name plus “fraud” or “complaint” online and check Google reviews. A few negative reviews are normal; a pattern of fraud complaints is not.

Should I pay for a “demand letter”?
A real demand letter comes from the employer, not sold by the agent. If an agent is selling you the letter itself for thousands of rupees, treat it as a scam.

What is the safest payment model?
Stage-wise payments with receipts at every step — and a “payment after visa” or “payment after reach” model where the big payment comes only after the result. That is exactly how we work.
