Qatar remains one of the top Gulf destinations for Indian workers — from construction and hospitality to healthcare, retail and logistics. But unlike a tourist trip, working in Qatar follows a strict employer-led visa process. No agent or consultant can issue you a work permit directly. Understanding the real process protects you from fraud and failed applications.
This guide explains how the Qatar work visa works, the documents you need, the Qatar Visa Center (QVC) process in India, and the checks you must do before signing any job offer.

How the Qatar Work Visa Works
Qatar’s work visa system is built around one rule: the employer applies, not the worker. A Qatar-registered company must first secure approval from the Ministry of Labour, and the entry visa is issued in your name before you travel. You cannot convert a tourist visa into a work visa after arriving in Qatar.
The process runs under Qatar’s labour laws, including Law No. 21 of 2015 and later reforms that improved worker mobility. After you arrive, your employer completes your medical screening, fingerprinting and Qatar ID (QID) issuance, usually within 30 days.
Warning: Never travel to Qatar on a tourist or visit visa with a plan to “find work and convert it later.” Working on a tourist visa is illegal and can lead to detention and deportation.
Documents Required for Qatar Work Visa
| Document | Details |
|---|---|
| Indian passport | Valid for at least 6 months |
| Job offer and employment contract | Signed contract from the Qatar employer, in Arabic and English, with role, salary and duration |
| Educational certificates | Attested by HRD, MEA India and the Qatar Embassy (required for skilled roles) |
| Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) | Issued in India; required for most job categories |
| Medical fitness certificate | Completed at the Qatar Visa Center in India |
| Passport-size photographs | As per QVC specifications |
Start your document attestation early. Certificate attestation through HRD, MEA and the embassy can take several weeks, and your file cannot move forward without it.
The QVC Process in India: Step by Step
Qatar set up Qatar Visa Centers (QVC) in India so that medical tests, biometrics and contract signing happen before you fly. QVCs operate in Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Kochi.
- Employer applies in Doha. Your Qatari employer submits the work visa request through the Ministry of Interior (Metrash2) or Hukoomi portal.
- You get a QVC appointment. Once the application is in the system, you book an appointment on qatarvisacenter.com for the nearest QVC.
- Single-visit formalities. At the QVC you complete biometric enrolment (fingerprints and photo), the medical fitness test (chest X-ray and blood tests), and sign your employment contract in front of QVC staff.
- Entry visa issued. After clearance, the entry visa is emailed to you. It is typically single-entry.
- Fly to Qatar. Travel on the entry visa and carry all original documents with you.
- Qatar ID within 30 days. Your employer completes the residence permit formalities and your Qatar ID (QID) is issued. Only then is your employment fully regularised.
You can track your case on the Ministry of Interior portal (portal.moi.gov.qa) using your passport number. For more on employer-led processes, see our work permit guidance page.

7 Checks Before You Sign Any Qatar Job Offer
Most fraud cases we hear about follow the same pattern: big salary promises, advance payment demanded, and no verifiable employer. Run these checks first:
| Check | What to verify |
|---|---|
| 1. Real employer | Company name, commercial registration and physical office in Qatar — verify independently, not on the agent’s word alone |
| 2. Written contract | Role, salary breakdown (basic + allowances), working hours, weekly off and contract duration — in writing, before you pay anything |
| 3. Demand letter | Ask for the employer’s demand letter; be cautious if none exists |
| 4. No advance visa fee | Genuine employers pay government visa costs; be very careful of agents demanding large upfront “visa fees” |
| 5. Salary in writing | We publish no fixed salary figures here because salaries vary by employer and role — insist the exact figure is in your signed contract |
| 6. Accommodation and transport | Confirm who provides housing, food and transport, and what deductions apply |
| 7. QVC route only | The offer must go through the QVC medical and biometric process — “direct airport visa” job offers are a red flag |
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Can I get a Qatar work visa without a job offer?
A: No. A confirmed job offer from a Qatar-registered employer is mandatory. There is no self-sponsored work visa route for Indians.
Q2: Is the Qatar tourist visa on arrival free for Indians?
A: Eligible Indian travellers can get a free 30-day visa on arrival for tourism (hotel booking required), but this cannot be used for employment.
Q3: How long does the Qatar work visa process take?
A: Timelines vary with the employer and government processing. Complete your documents early and track your case on the MOI portal.
Q4: Can I change jobs in Qatar?
A: Qatar’s labour reforms allow job changes through the proper electronic notification process, including notice periods. Changing jobs without following the legal process can cause serious problems.
Q5: Who pays for the Qatar work visa?
A: Government fees are normally paid by the employer. Be cautious of any agent asking you for large visa payments in advance.
