Taiwan — night markets, high-speed rail, Taroko Gorge and one of Asia’s friendliest food scenes — is on many Indian travellers’ lists. But the Taiwan e-visa for Indians comes with conditions, and applying through the wrong route wastes time and money. Read this first: the eligibility rules below are the deciding factor, and everything else in this guide (documents, process, tips) follows from which route applies to you.

Taiwan E-Visa Eligibility for Indians — Read This First

Taiwan does not offer a general tourist e-visa that any Indian can apply for independently. There are three routes, and you must fit one of them:

  1. Tourist e-visa via designated travel agencies: Available only if you are travelling with a Taiwan Tourism Administration-designated travel agency (30-day, single entry).
  2. Business e-visa: Available with a recommendation from TAITRA (Taiwan External Trade Development Council) for genuine business visits.
  3. Visa-free TAC (Travel Authorization Certificate, 14 days): Available only if you hold a valid — or expired less than 10 years ago and used at least once — visa or residence permit from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the US, the UK or a Schengen state.

If none of these apply to you — the common case for an ordinary independent Indian tourist — you should apply for a regular visitor visa through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC) in India, not an e-visa. Do not pay any website that promises a Taiwan e-visa to all Indians; check the official TECC/ROC-Taiwan guidance first.

Documents Required (Tourist E-Visa via Designated Agency)

If you qualify for the agency route, your designated travel agency will typically ask for:

Document Details
Passport Valid 6+ months with blank pages
Photograph Recent, white background
Agency booking Confirmed package/itinerary with the designated agency
Return flight tickets Confirmed onward travel
Hotel bookings For the full stay
Bank statements Recent, showing trip funding
Employment proof Salary slips or business proof, if asked

For the regular visitor visa route (most independent travellers), TECC generally asks for the application form, passport, photo, tickets, hotel bookings, bank statements, employment/leave proof and a cover letter — confirm the current checklist on the official TECC India page before applying.

2. Apply for the TAC on the official portal before departure.
3. Print the TAC and carry the qualifying visa/residence permit for inspection.

1. Book an appointment with the TECC office for your jurisdiction.
2. Submit the form, documents and fee in person or as instructed.
3. Collect your passport and verify the visa details.

Processing times vary by route and season — check the official portal rather than relying on any fixed number.

Travel Tips for Indian Visitors to Taiwan

  • Transport: The High-Speed Rail links Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung in under two hours; the Taipei MRT is excellent.
  • Food: Night markets (Shilin, Raohe, Fengjia) are the heart of Taiwan — most stalls are pork/seafood heavy, so vegetarian travellers should learn a few Mandarin phrases or use translation apps.
  • Money: The New Taiwan Dollar (TWD). Cards are widely accepted in cities; carry cash for markets.
  • Weather: Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) are the most pleasant; summers are hot and typhoon-prone.
  • Insurance: Worth having for any international trip — our travel insurance guide explains what to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The tourist e-visa is only for travellers using Taiwan Tourism Administration-designated travel agencies. Independent tourists generally need a regular visitor visa via TECC.

What is the Taiwan TAC and who can use it?
The Travel Authorization Certificate gives 14-day visa-free entry, but only to travellers holding a qualifying visa or residence permit (Australia, Canada, Japan, NZ, US, UK or Schengen) that is valid or expired less than 10 years ago and has been used at least once.

Should I trust websites selling Taiwan e-visas to all Indians?
No. Taiwan has no general e-visa for independent Indian tourists. Use only official TECC/ROC-Taiwan channels or designated agencies.
