Why Indians Love Bhutan

Bhutan is one of the easiest international trips for Indians — no visa is required; you enter with a valid passport or voter ID, and obtain an entry permit at the border or airport. From the border town of Phuentsholing, the road climbs through forests into Thimphu, the charming capital.

But Bhutan has entry rules and daily levies that change from time to time. Always check the official Department of Tourism, Bhutan website before your trip for the current fees, permit rules, and entry requirements.

Day-Wise 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive Phuentsholing / entry, drive to Thimphu. Complete entry permit formalities, then drive up to Thimphu (about 5–6 hours). Evening walk around the clock tower area and local market.

Day 2 — Thimphu sightseeing. Visit the Buddha Dordenma statue, Memorial Chorten, Tashichho Dzong, and the folk heritage museum.

Day 3 — Thimphu to Punakha. Drive over the beautiful Dochula Pass (108 chortens, stunning views on a clear day). Visit Punakha Dzong and walk the suspension bridge.

Day 4 — Punakha to Paro. Drive back to Paro. Visit the National Museum, Paro Dzong, and stroll the old town. Rest early — tomorrow is the big hike.

Day 5 — Tiger’s Nest hike, depart. The hike to Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery takes about 4–6 hours round trip — moderately challenging but unforgettable. Return to Paro and fly or drive out.

Permits, Fees and Practical Rules

Item What to know
Entry for Indians No visa; valid passport or voter ID + entry permit
Daily levy / SDF Bhutan charges visitors a Sustainable Development Fee — verify the current official rate before budgeting
Permit areas Some regions beyond Thimphu/Paro need route permits — your guide or tour operator arranges these
Guide rule Tourist guide requirements have changed over time — check the current official policy before planning

Never plan the budget on an old blog’s fee figure. Government levies are the one cost that can genuinely change between seasons — the official tourism website is the only number you should trust.

Best Time to Visit and Cost Planning

March–May: spring — flowers, clear views, pleasant weather. October–December: autumn — the clearest mountain views and festival season; the most popular months. June–September: monsoon — lush but cloudy. January–February: winter — cold but crisp, fewer tourists.

A Bhutan trip has three cost blocks: travel (flights to Paro or Bagdogra/Hasimara + road), stay and food, and government levies and guide costs (the part people forget). Do not compare a package that includes levies with one that does not — that is where most “cheap package” surprises hide. Always ask for an itemised breakup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Do Indians need a visa for Bhutan?
No. Indian citizens enter with a valid passport or voter ID and obtain an entry permit at the border or airport. Rules can change, so verify before travelling.

Q2. What is the best time to visit Bhutan?
March to May and October to December are generally the best — clear views, pleasant weather, and festival season in autumn.

Q3. How difficult is the Tiger’s Nest hike?
Moderate — about 4–6 hours round trip with rest stops. Anyone with average fitness can do it if they pace themselves; start early in the morning.

Q4. Is Bhutan expensive for Indian tourists?
It can be, mainly because of levies, guide costs, and the remote location. Always ask for an itemised breakup and verify the current levy officially.

Q5. Can I travel to Bhutan independently without a guide?
The rules for independent travel have changed over time. Check the current official policy before planning.
