Turkey E-Visa for Indians: Eligibility Rules and Application
Share this article:WhatsApp

Istanbul’s bazaars, Cappadocia’s balloons and the Turquoise Coast draw thousands of Indian travellers every year. But the Turkey e-visa for Indians is conditional — and this condition decides everything. If you meet it, the online process is quick and simple. If you don’t, you need a sticker visa from the consulate instead. Read the eligibility section first; it will save you from the most common (and expensive) mistake Indians make with Turkey.

Turkey E-Visa Eligibility for Indians — The Condition

Indian passport holders can use the Turkish e-visa only if they hold a valid sticker visa or residence permit from one of these: a Schengen state, the United States, the United Kingdom, or Ireland.

Important fine print from the official portal:

  • It must be a sticker visa or residence permit — e-visas or electronic travel authorizations (ETAs) of those countries do not qualify.
  • The qualifying visa/residence permit must be valid at the time you apply and travel.
  • The Turkish e-visa issued is for tourism or trade only, generally single entry with up to a 30-day stay.

If you do not hold such a visa or permit, do not attempt the e-visa — apply for a sticker visa at the Turkish consulate/embassy or through the official visa application centre in India. Always verify your eligibility on the official portal (evisa.gov.tr) by selecting your nationality before paying anything.

Documents Required for the Turkey E-Visa

The online form asks for fewer documents than a consulate application, but keep these ready:

Document Details
Passport Valid 6+ months beyond your travel dates
Qualifying visa/residence permit Valid Schengen/US/UK/Ireland sticker visa or residence permit
Photograph Recent, as per the portal’s specifications
Return flight tickets Confirmed onward travel
Hotel bookings Accommodation for your stay
Travel insurance Recommended; sometimes requested
Email address The e-visa is delivered by email

Your passport details must match the qualifying visa exactly — the e-visa is electronically linked to your passport number.

How to Apply for the Turkey E-Visa (If Eligible)

  1. Confirm eligibility. On evisa.gov.tr, select India as nationality and confirm the portal offers you the e-visa option.
  2. Fill the application. Enter personal and passport details, plus details of your qualifying Schengen/US/UK/Ireland visa or residence permit.
  3. Review carefully. Mistakes in the passport number or dates can invalidate the e-visa.
  4. Pay the fee online. Pay only on the official portal — never on copycat sites.
  5. Download and print. The e-visa arrives by email. Print a copy and keep a digital backup.
  6. Carry your qualifying visa. At Turkish immigration, you may be asked to show the Schengen/US/UK/Ireland visa or residence permit your e-visa was based on.

Not eligible? Book a consulate appointment for the sticker visa route — it needs the full document set (bank statements, employment proof, cover letter, itinerary) and more lead time.

Travel Tips for Indian Visitors to Turkey

  • Istanbul: Get an Istanbulkart for trams, ferries and the metro — it makes the city dramatically cheaper to explore.
  • Cappadocia: Book the hot-air balloon at least a week ahead in season; sunrise slots sell out first.
  • Money: The Turkish Lira (TRY). Cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for bazaars.
  • Food: Kebabs, baklava and Turkish tea are everywhere; Indian restaurants are easy to find in Istanbul and Antalya.
  • Insurance: Strongly recommended — see our travel insurance guide before flying.

Generally up to 30 days, single entry, for tourism or trade. Confirm the exact conditions printed on your e-visa.

The online process is usually quick once submitted, but always check the official portal and apply with a buffer before your flight.
