Schengen visa rules for Indian applicants have seen important updates — most notably a favourable “cascade” rule that rewards genuine travellers with longer-validity multiple-entry visas. If you are planning Europe travel, here is what has changed and how to use it to your advantage.
The biggest change: the cascade rule for Indians
Since April 2024, the EU applies a special cascade regime for Indian citizens applying for Schengen visas, confirmed by the European External Action Service. In practice it works like this:
- After you have lawfully used two Schengen visas within the previous three years, you can be issued a 2-year multiple-entry visa.
- After lawfully using that 2-year visa, you can then qualify for a 5-year multiple-entry visa.
This is a major improvement over the old pattern, where most first-time applicants received single-entry visas valid only for their trip dates. Genuine travel history now directly builds longer visa validity.
Visa fees and stay limits
- Visa fee: €90 for adults — the standard Schengen fee since June 2024. Children aged 6–12 pay a reduced fee; children under 6 are generally exempt. Confirm the exact current fee with the consulate you apply to.
- Stay limit: even with a 5-year multiple-entry visa, each stay is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. Long validity does not mean you can live in Europe.
- Processing time: commonly up to 15 calendar days, and can extend to 45 days in complex cases — apply well in advance.
Appointment slots: plan early
Appointment availability at application centres and consulates varies by city and season. During peak travel months (April–June, October–December), slots fill fast in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai. Book your appointment as soon as your travel dates are reasonably firm, and keep your documents ready before the slot opens.
Documents checklist
- Passport valid at least 3 months beyond your planned return, with blank pages, and issued within the last 10 years;
- Completed application form and recent photographs as per specifications;
- Confirmed flight itinerary and hotel bookings;
- Travel medical insurance with minimum €30,000 coverage, valid across the Schengen area;
- Bank statements (usually the last 3–6 months), income tax returns and employment proof;
- A cover letter explaining your travel purpose and itinerary.
Never submit fake documents — a refusal on fraud grounds can also lead to a future ban.
What this means for Indian travellers
- Frequent travellers benefit most: each lawful trip builds your record toward the 2-year and then the 5-year visa.
- First-time applicants: expect a visa limited to your trip; use it correctly and your next applications get easier.
- Apply at the right consulate: apply to the country where you will spend the most days (your main destination).
- ETIAS: the EU’s new travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers has been repeatedly delayed and was not yet in force as of late 2026 — it does not apply to travellers who need a Schengen visa.
Before vs now: at a glance
- Before: most Indian applicants received single-entry visas tied to trip dates. Now: lawful travel history unlocks 2-year, then 5-year multiple-entry visas under the cascade.
- Before: €80 standard visa fee (pre-June 2024). Now: €90 standard fee.
- Before: travel history counted for little. Now: it directly improves your visa validity.
Your next steps
- Start preparing at least two months before your trip.
- Verify the latest fees and checklist on the official embassy or application-centre website.
- Strengthen your bank statements and documents well in advance — avoid sudden large deposits.
- Book your appointment as soon as a slot opens.
Common rejection reasons to avoid
- Weak financial proof or unexplained large deposits;
- Unclear travel purpose or day-by-day itinerary;
- Inadequate travel insurance;
- Previous overstay or visa misuse;
- Applying at the wrong consulate.
Frequently asked questions
Have Schengen visas become easier for Indians? To an extent — the cascade rule gives repeat travellers longer-validity multiple-entry visas. First-time applicants still face full scrutiny.
Will every Indian get the 5-year visa? No — you must first lawfully use the 2-year multiple-entry visa. Consulates decide based on your record.
What is the visa fee? The standard adult fee is €90 since June 2024. Confirm the exact current fee with the consulate.
What if I cannot get an appointment slot? Book 6–8 weeks ahead, check daily for cancellations, and keep your dates flexible.
Can I get a Schengen visa without travel history? Yes — strong finances, a stable job or business, a clear itinerary and genuine intent can carry a first application.
Does a 5-year visa let me stay 5 years? No — the 90/180-day rule applies to every stay.
